ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — A snowy day in January didn’t stop 30 members of Cafe Europa, including 24 Holocaust survivors, from joining virtually for a “celebration of trees” for Tu Bishvat. Farmer Tina Miller, from Grow It Green Morristown, provided a micro green planting demonstration that inspired several survivors to try their own.
Cafe Europa at Jewish Family Service of MetroWest NJ is a socialization program for Holocaust survivors; the program transitioned to virtual programming during COVID-19. More than 70 survivors participate in the program, which includes educational speakers, holiday celebrations and group discussions. There is no charge for these socialization programs. Volunteers are currently delivering lunches to participants during Cafe Europa, as well.
“I enjoyed the program very much,” one survivor said. “After the meeting, I went and purchased potting soil, chives and parsley seeds to plant indoors.”
A second-generation caregiver also ordered parsley seeds to plant with her mom for Passover.
