ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — More than 150 volunteers participated in this year’s eighth annual RAKES program — Random Acts of Kindness Extended to Seniors. The volunteers cleaned away and bagged the leaves on the properties of over 75 senior citizens.
“I would like to thank the many volunteers that donated their time and efforts,” said Department of Public Works’ Commissioner Joseph Scarpelli. “Lincoln School’s Student Council, Boy and Girl Scout troops, the Knights of Columbus, Cross Fit-Nutley Gym, the NHS athletic teams, along with a number of other civic groups participated. A special thank you to Mr. Piro and the high school coaching staffs for their assistance in making the program a success.
“Our citizens, along with the town’s many civic and service organizations, continue to make a difference in our community. It is this volunteer spirit that makes Nutley a unique and special place to live and work.”
Scarpelli stated that he continues to institute changes that decrease spending and reduce manpower. The 2015 DPW budget is actually less than 2008 when he took office, said Scarpelli.
“I have continued to make the necessary changes that have made the DPW more efficient and streamlined. I am committed to continuing our cost effectiveness, along with seeking available grant money, to help our bottom line. At the same time, we must maintain and look to expand those services that either increase our revenue stream or utilize volunteers,” he said.
