Two suspects arrested with gun for robbery in West Ward

NEWARK, NJ — Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose is reporting two suspects were arrested for robbing a 43-year-old Somerset man on Sunday, July 24, in a continuing investigation.

A group of men robbed the victim after he exited his car on North Munn Avenue on Sunday, July 24, shortly after 4 p.m. After the robbery, they fled in a gray Hyundai, which was reported carjacked from East Orange.

Officers from the 1st and 4th precincts quickly located the Hyundai near Georgia King Village and one of the suspects, 19-year-old Trevon McCoy, who was walking inside of the complex with two other males. Officers found items taken during the robbery on McCoy and evidence believed to have been taken during other robberies. Kenyon Esannason, 19, who was with Martin, was arrested for outstanding Newark and Fairfield warrants. The third man was interviewed without being arrested.

A second suspect, a 17-year-old male from East Orange, was carrying a loaded gun when he was arrested, while trying to sell the victim’s phone in a store located on East Market Street. The gun was stolen in Richland County.

McCoy and the juvenile are charged with robbery, conspiracy, receiving stolen property, possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes.

Ambrose commended the efforts of all of the officers who assisted with the arrest of these two suspects: “This is an ongoing investigation, with the likelihood they will be implicated in other robberies. I am confident that the robbery squad detectives will identify their accomplices and have them off our streets and behind bars shortly.”

Ambrose urges anyone with information about the other suspects or any other crime to utilize the department’s 24-hour Crime Stoppers’ tip line at 877-695-8477 or 877-695-4867. All anonymous Crime Stopper tips are kept confidential and could result in a reward.
