Man arrested for Maplewood bank robbery

MAPLEWOOD, NJ — On Wednesday, July 20, approximately 12:30 p.m., Maplewood Police Dispatch received a call of a male running from the Wells Fargo Bank on Maplewood Avenue and being chased by a second male. Officers responded to the area and to the bank and discovered that a male had passed a note to a teller demanding money. No threats were made and no weapons were observed or implied.

The male seen running from the bank by the caller was the perpetrator and he was being followed by an employee of the bank. A license plate of the vehicle the perpetrator entered was obtained prior to it fleeing the scene.

Through investigation, police identified the owner of the vehicle as John Walsh, 37, of Jersey City; he was taken into custody approximately an hour later. Maplewood detectives processed and charged Walsh with robbery and criminal attempt to commit robbery.

All charges are merely accusations and all defendants are presumed innocent until proved guilty in a court of law.
