MAPLEWOOD, NJ — Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Maplewood Police Chief Robert J. Cimino announced on Monday, June 20, that the man found dead on Monday, May 30, in the vicinity of Hickory Drive and Wyoming Avenue in Maplewood has been identified as Samuel Smith Jr., 60, of Newark.
Smith sustained fatal injuries when he was struck by a hit-and-run driver. He was living alone in Newark and notification of next of kin did not occur until Friday, June 17.
The investigation into the case is active and ongoing, according to police.
