Maplewood anglers take top honors

NEWARK, NJ — Essex County held a fishing derby on Saturday, May 21, in Weequahic Park. Prizes were given to participants who caught the most fish in each category.

The winners in the boys’ age 11 to 15 category were Julian Knight of Maplewood and Anthony Weston and Lauren Bell, both from Hillside. They each caught two fish. Xavier Knight of Maplewood caught the most fish in the boys’ age five and under category with three fish. Presenting the awards to the winners were Newark Councilman John James and Frank Gesumaria from the Essex County Parks Department.

Upcoming fishing derbies will be held Saturday, June 11, in Monte Irvin Orange Park and Saturday, June 18, in the South Mountain Recreation Complex by the Orange Reservoir. For information, call the Essex County Department of Parks, Recreation & Cultural Affairs at 973-735-6229.
