‘Calling Out: Activism and the American Jewish Woman’

MILLBURN, NJ — Congregation B’nai Israel’s Lifelong Learning and Sisterhood, along with Millburn-Short Hills Hadassah, will present “Calling Out: Activism and the American Jewish Woman” with scholar-in-residence Lauren Strauss, on March 17 and 18.

On Saturday, March 17, during the Shabbat morning service, explore the “Me Too” movement and the Jewish communal response. America’s “Me Too” moment has brought on a flood of introspection, confession and expressions of anger from women in every class and arena. In their recent history, Jews in America have often confronted the treatment of women, both within and outside the context of Judaism. Strauss will lead this informal discussion starting 15 minutes after the start of kiddush. Bring your food into the Multi-Purpose Room for the conversation.

On Sunday, March 18, Strauss will present “Before Gloria: American Jewish Women on the Barricades, 1900s-1950s” at 9:30 a.m. In this bagel breakfast and illustrated lecture, Strauss explores American Jewish women’s activism in the early decades of the 20th century, by exploring campaigns to legalize birth control and end human trafficking of Jewish girls, Jewish women as leaders of the labor movement, rent strikes, and consumer protests, Jewish women’s opposition to fascism in the 1930s and ’40s, and their involvement in the early civil rights movement.
