Junior historians: creating knowledge through research

MONTCLAIR, NJ — The Montclair Historical Society’s Homeschool Series is conducting an eight-week series program that focuses on key components of research-based history. The series uses the Crane/YWCA and Shultz House Museums’ artifacts, primary source documents, and living history to help students focus on concepts and questions that explore the past and how it correlates to the present.

“Our objective is to conduct historical research, while showing the students how to understand the use of source-based research,” teacher Angelica Kane said in a press release. “We also strive to help students develop communication skills by preparing and presenting a final report.”

In this class, history is personal, as the students explore their own family’s history through online and print sources. Students are also encouraged to conduct oral history interviews with their family members.

The course is held on Thursdays, from 10 a.m. to noon, each week from Sept. 8 through Oct. 27. Tuition is charged. This course is targeted at children ages 12 to 15. To register, call 973-744-1796 or send a note to [email protected].
