Newark man sentenced to 18 years for attempted murder

NEWARK, NJ — Angelo Carlo, 30, of Newark, was sentenced on Monday, April 25, to 18 years in state prison by Superior Court Judge John Zunic.

Following a jury trial, Carlo, who goes by the nickname Rage, was convicted on Wednesday, March 16, of attempted murder, aggravated assault and weapons offenses, after shooting at a 22-year-old Newark man seven times. The victim was hit three times, but survived his injuries.

The shooting occurred on Oct. 29, 2014. Carlo and the victim got into an argument earlier in the day that resulted in a fistfight. Later that day, the two ran into one each other in the 600 block of Broadway in Newark and Carlo shot the victim, according to Assistant Prosecutor David Feldman, who tried the case with Assistant Prosecutor Allison Korodan.

“This defendant poses a serious threat to the community, which is why we argued for a lengthy prison term. He gave virtually no thought to pulling out a gun and shooting at another person seven times over a minor dispute,’’ said Korodan.

Carlo has two prior felony convictions — one for robbery and one for possession of drugs in a school zone.
