Newark invites residents to help celebrate 350th anniversary of city

NEWARK, NJ — The city of Newark will be 350 years old in 2016. To help the city commemorate this landmark, the Newark Trust for Education is partnering with the Newark Celebration 350 Committee to support the launch of educational activities that will bring together parents, educators and students in celebration of Newark’s cultural, historical and social roots.

The celebration will culminate in May 2016 — founder’s month.  

The goals for this program are to:

• Ignite widespread interest and pride in Newark by engaging students, family members and educators in their city’s and/or school’s rich history; and
• Inform a larger audience of students and community members about a significant period, person or event in Newark’s history.

Here are some ways to make history come alive in your schools:

• Use of arts as a vehicle for learning and sharing with students and families — theater, poetry, spoken word, dance, painting, music, etc.
• Host a community event/dinner for families that showcases Newark’s rich history.
• Create a short documentary on the city to share with the broader community.
• Develop a program that highlights the history of your school.

We encourage each school to be creative and explore new and innovative ways to engage with parents, families and educators at your school.

Eligibility

All public and private schools in Newark are eligible to apply, including:

• District, charter, parochial and independent schools.

Application submission

Applications should be submitted using the online application process.

Each applicant must include an appropriate fiscal agent such as parent association or request reimbursement for all expenses covered in the grant with one itemized request substantiated by invoices.

Deadline

Interested schools are invited to submit applications to the Newark Trust for Education by Tuesday, March 15.
