Newark police report found military object

NEWARK, NJ — Newark police reported to officials at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst the discovery of a military ordinance on Thursday, Sept. 22, at Sims Metal Management, a scrap metal business located at Richards Street and Raymond Boulevard.

The ordinance, discovered at approximately 7 a.m. by workers, weighs more than 1,000 pounds and has been determined safe by the Emergency Services Unit of the Newark Police Division.

Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose commended both the workers who reported the object and the Emergency Services Unit for its immediate response to ensuring that the ordinance was safe.

“In this season of uncertainty regarding found suspicious objects, an increased partnership of vigilance between the public and the police is vital,” Ambrose said.
