Police investigate shooting of 5-year-old girl

NEWARK, NJ — Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose reported July 5 that members of the Newark Police Division’s Major Crimes Unit are investigating the shooting of a 5-year-old girl that occurred Wednesday, July 4.

At approximately 11:30 p.m., the girl was walking with her father in the 200 block of Avon Avenue when she was shot. The victim was transported to University Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

“Police are pursuing all leads and anyone with information is encouraged to contact us regarding this the cowardly act,”  Ambrose said.
