Seven-year-old victim in fatal Newark fire identified

NEWARK, NJ — Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens II and Newark Public Safety Director Brian A. O’Hara announced April 8 that Sahir Hartfield, 7, died in a fire at 65 Astor St. in Newark on April 7.

The fire was reported at approximately 4:47 a.m. It was brought under control at approximately 5:15 a.m.

Sahir was pronounced dead at the scene after his body was discovered on the third floor.

Three other children, ages 1, 5 and 11, escaped, along with two adults.

The investigation is active and ongoing.
