Ryan O’Mara, senior – NHS hockey team
“Ryan O’Mara is the captain of the NHS hockey team, and currently leads the team in goals and points — 9g, 8a – 17pts. A large-bodied center, O’Mara not only benefits the team in the offensive side, but on the defensive side as well, logging several blocked shots per game, and consistently posting a good faceoff-win percentage.” — Coach Andrew Surowiec
Is your family big on hockey? How did you get started?
My family always liked hockey, but since I started playing my family’s love of the game grew immensely. I got introduced to the game by my uncle who has two kids that played. I also have to give credit to my parents who drove hundreds of miles for me to improve as a player.
How do you get pumped up for a game?
I am very unique in the way that before every game on the bus I have to calm myself down and listen to some country. Once I get to the rink I start my pregame routine which includes stretching, taping my stick and stick handling.
How do you bond with your teammates?
My teammates and I have a great bond and it stems from getting food after a game or hanging out on the weekends. I was lucky enough to grow a strong relationship with two teammates that happened to play on my club team this year.
What’s your favorite hockey team? Players? How come?
Growing up, my family was fortunate enough to have season tickets to the New Jersey Devils so throughout the years I became a huge fan. My favorite current Devil has to be Nico Hischier because he just amazes me every game he plays due to the fact that he is just a year older than me.
Could you tell us about your best memory on the ice?
Throughout my years of playing for Nutley Hockey I’ve had many memories that will stick with me for the rest of my life but the best memory will always be my freshman year when I scored my first high school goal in my first varsity game on my first shot on net.
Do you play other sports?
Yes, I also play football in the fall and baseball in the spring.
Are you involved in other school or town activities?
Once a week I attend Nutley Fellowship of Christian Athletes, at FCA. Coach Vick and the guys talk about values that create men of integrity. Every summer we go on a mission trip to help those who are going through hard times. I’ve been to South Dakota and Tennessee with Nutley FCA.
What are your post-graduate plans?
Next year I plan to attend a four-year university to play club hockey, and major in business. I’ve narrowed it down to schools which are University of Mississippi and Rowan University.
