Payne, Jr. was joined by Central Ward Councilwoman Gayle Chaneyfield Jenkins, as well as parent advocates.
“I was a kid from Newark. There’s nothing special about me that says you can’t be a member of Congress one day,” said Payne Jr. “I worked hard, I was fortunate, I had some breaks and opportunities in my life. And if you work hard, get your education, stay focused and not let distractions out on the street get a hold of you, there’s no reason you can’t sit here one day yourself.”
During the visit, which took place during Black History Month, Payne Jr. discussed the legacy of his father, the late Congressman Donald M. Payne, New Jersey’s first black congressman, and how his father inspired him to pursue public service. Payne Jr. also taught the students how to tie a bow tie, his signature neckwear.
“Our youngsters, when given the opportunity, perform just as well as any other students in the country,” Payne Jr. added. “That is why I will keep fighting to give New Jersey students the tools to succeed — good schools, affordable college education and a vibrant economy.”
North Star Academy Central Avenue Middle School opened in August with an inaugural class of 90 fifth-grade students. Central Avenue Middle School is North Star’s fifth middle school and is led by Principal Tonya Ballard.
