Bicyclist struck by motor vehicle, killed in Maplewood

MAPLEWOOD, NJ — On Saturday, July 7, at approximately 2:30 a.m., Maplewood police responded to the area of 1600 Springfield Ave. on a report of a bicyclist who had been struck by a motor vehicle, according to the police department and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.

The vehicle had been traveling east on Springfield Avenue when it struck cyclist Jeffrey Scott Jr., 29, of Vauxhall. Police and emergency medical services arrived on scene just minutes later and attempted to render first aid; however, Scott succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on scene at 2:48 a.m. An autopsy will be completed by the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.

The driver of the involved vehicle remained at the scene; the vehicle was impounded for further examination by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office. No charges have been filed at this time.

The incident is currently an active investigation by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, which is standard procedure in serious or fatal accidents. The Maplewood Police Department is working closely with ECPO investigators and will release further information when possible.
