MAPLEWOOD / SOUTH ORANGE, NJ — Calling all creative youth! In observance of Martin Luther King Jr., the South Orange-Maplewood Community Coalition on Race is asking elementary school students to create posters and middle through high school students to create posters, spoken word pieces or essays that describe the changes they would like to see in society and how they will help to make those changes happen.
The theme of 2018’s MLK Celebration is “Change is Gonna Come,” taking inspiration from Sam Cooke’s iconic song of the civil rights era. Posters can be from 8.5-inches-by-11-inches up to 22-inches-by-28-inches, and spoken word pieces and essay submissions must be 500 words or fewer.
Entries are being accepted through Oct. 27 and all entries must be submitted electronically to [email protected]. Please include phone number and email address with submission. All digital submissions will be displayed on a special page of the coalition’s website at www.twotowns.org.
Winning posters will be displayed after the 2 p.m. celebration on Jan. 15 at Columbia High School. Winners will be announced in December 2017. For more information, call 973-761-6116.
