‘Ladies in the Landscape: 1900–1940’

Jenny Rose Carey

MAPLEWOOD, NJ — On Monday, Feb. 4, at 7:30 p.m., the Maplewood Garden Club will meet at Maplewood Memorial Library, 51 Baker St., to hear Jenny Rose Carey, senior director at the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s Meadowbrook Farm, present “Ladies in the Landscape: 1900–1940,” detailing how horticulture changed the lives of women in the early 20th century.

Carey will discuss the New Schools of Horticulture for Women, the Garden Club Movement and early garden clubs, and will highlight early female gardeners and landscape designers, including Beatrix Farr and Ellen Biddle Shipman, who left a lasting impact on gardens in America, not only by creating beautiful landscapes, but by breaking barriers so women could get jobs in horticulture.

Her presentation follows a short business meeting and is free and open to all. No RSVP is required.
