Maplewood to replace pavers, bump out sidewalks in village

MAPLEWOOD, NJ — As part of the aesthetic enhancement and safety upgrades to Maplewood Village, the township will be replacing the existing sidewalk pavers on both sides of Maplewood Avenue and installing traffic-calming bump outs on Maplewood Avenue’s west side. During the course of the project, which began Oct. 1, the township will advise of any loss of parking spots, and temporary closures of sidewalks and/or vehicular detours. The Maplewood Police Department will have officers assist in pedestrian and vehicular detours as needed.

The project schedule, which is subject to change due to inclement weather, is as follows:

  • From Oct. 1 through 5, the contractor will install curb bump outs on the west side of Maplewood Avenue at three intersections — Durand Road, Baker Street and Lenox Place. The bump outs will increase the sidewalk area and slow vehicular traffic. Sidewalks in these areas will be intermittently partially closed.
  • From Oct. 8 through 12, the contractor will install drainage improvements at the edge of the existing curbing and in the area of the newly-installed bump outs.
  • From Oct. 17 through Nov. 16, the contractor will begin removing the existing pavers and installing new ones. New curbing will be installed as necessary — for example, to edge the new bump outs. The work will begin on the north end of Maplewood Avenue, in discrete blocks, starting at Durand Road, east to Woodland Road, and continue in this order: on Maplewood Avenue, east on Inwood Place; on Maplewood Avenue east on Highland Avenue; on Maplewood Avenue, east of Baker; and, finally, Maplewood Avenue south to Lenox Place.

There will be no construction or sidewalk/street impediments on Halloween, Oct. 31. All work will halt on Nov. 16; any work left to be done, will be completed beginning Jan. 15, after the holiday season.

The township is committed to minimizing inconvenience to the public and merchants during this project. The township will provide project updates on the township website at twp.maplewood.nj.us, email blasts, Twitter updates at @MaplewoodTWP, Nixle updates at local.nixle.com/maplewood-police-department-nj, via the Maplewood Township Facebook page at facebook.com/MaplewoodTWP and the Maplewood Construction News Facebook page.

During the project, materials and equipment will be staged in the upper Burgdorff parking lot, resulting in the temporary loss of some parking spots. The Maplewood Police Department will secure the staging area, and assist in any vehicular detours as needed during the project.
