MAPLEWOOD, NJ — The Maplewood Memorial Park Conservancy will have a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the installation of Phase 1 of its first major landscape project, Flagpole Hill, in Memorial Park on Saturday, Nov. 17, at noon on Flagpole Hill at the WWI Memorial opposite the train station on Dunnell Road.
Based on original plans by the park’s designers, the Olmsted Brothers firm, the Flagpole Hill project restores a picturesque design to the border of the park on Dunnell Road. Phase 1 is a beautifully planted bed of shrubs, trees and ground cover at the entrance to the park across from the train station. This and three additional planting phases will allow views and circulation into the park, clarify entrances, and offer seasonal beauty and interest to wildlife while providing shield from the roadway.
This project is made possible by support of the township of Maplewood, and funding by the Maplewood Open Space Trust Fund. It has been more than a year in planning and has received the approval of the Maplewood Historic Preservation Commission and the New Jersey Historic Preservation Office.
