MAPLEWOOD, NJ — Maplewood Police Deputy Chief Albert Sally sent out a reminder to motorists and pedestrians to be aware of their surroundings and to take precautions to avoid accidents.
“Visibility for motorists is a concern with it becoming darker earlier in the evening during the fall and winter months. Motorists should inspect their vehicles to make sure it’s in good running condition such as: tires, windshield wipers, lights and brakes. Vehicle windshields should be clear of any obstruction so visibility is not impaired. Motorists should also obey traffic speeds, yielding to pedestrians, no talking or texting on handheld cell phone while driving, and traffic laws,” Sally said in the Oct. 29 reminder.
“Pedestrians should stay alert and vigilant when walking. Never assume that motorists can see you or that they will stop for you. Wear bright-colored clothing to be seen by motorists. Cross streets at marked crosswalks or intersections. Look left, right and left again before crossing the street. Be careful of turning vehicles; make sure drivers see you. Do not be distracted on a cell phone — talking or texting — while crossing the street,” he continued. “Pedestrians may have the right of way to cross the street but that does not guarantee your safety. Pedestrians should make eye contact with the driver whenever possible and wait until the vehicle has stopped before you cross.”
