Repair Cafe comes to SOMA

MAPLEWOOD, NJ — There are more than thousand Repair Cafes worldwide and the first one in New Jersey in coming to Maplewood and South Orange on Saturday, Oct. 21, from 2 to 5 p.m. at Morrow Memorial Church, 600 Ridgewood Road in Maplewood.

As part of a growing movement, Repair Cafes are free meeting places and they’re all about repairing things — together. With expert volunteers, repairs are made to all kinds of beloved items. Visitors bring their broken items from home. Together with the specialists they start making their repairs — it’s an ongoing learning process. If you have nothing to repair, you can enjoy a cup of coffee or you can lend a hand with someone else’s repair job. You can also get inspired at the reading table by leafing through books on repairs and DIY.

SOMA Repair Cafe has drafted repair experts for sewing, jewelry, lamps and small electronics, bikes, tech devices, woodwork, and carpentry, as well as assistance to download digital photos. So, if you have a broken, beloved item you want to fix, don’t throw it out — bring it to Repair Cafe.

If you would like to share your repair skills or would like to volunteer to help at the event, contact Cathy Rowe at [email protected] or 973-558-0863.
