SO recommends caution in village parks and playgrounds

SOUTH ORANGE, NJ — Village staff is working hard to clean up and address any damage and unsafe conditions that may have been caused by the recent storms, a March 14 statement on the South Orange website reads.

Residents may have noticed the damage done by recent storms to some village parks and playgrounds. Tree removal, cleanup and repairs are still needed in many areas. The backstop at Farrell Field was destroyed, fencing was damaged in Meadowland Park, and wiring and lighting was damaged at Chyzowych Field, to name a few. Grove Park, in particular, has suffered significant tree damage and needs attention. In addition to what is clearly visible, there may be hazards that are not visible and/or have not yet been discovered.

The village recommends that residents use extreme caution and avoid playground and park areas where there is a significant amount of debris and fallen or overhanging trees. The South Orange Department of Public Works is moving as quickly as possible to address all areas of concern throughout the village, according to the statement. However, the significant damage caused by the recent storms villagewide will require weeks, not days, of effort. In addition, the soft ground may limit the ability to use the necessary heavy equipment on grassy areas, like parks and playgrounds, in the near term.

“The village greatly appreciates the patience, cooperation and common sense of residents in avoiding such areas for the time being,” the statement reads. “Meanwhile, as always, please notify the appropriate village officials if you observe any hazards not yet identified.”
