SOUTH ORANGE, NJ — The South Orange Fire Department responded to 9-1-1 report of a motor vehicle collision at 3:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 19, in the 300 block of Scotland Road, according to a press release from the fire department.
Arriving firefighters found that a vehicle had left the roadway and entered the front lawn area of a private Scotland Road property, coming to a stop in shrubbery, against the house. The engine compartment of the vehicle had ignited, with fire extending to the vegetation and natural growth under the vehicle and in close proximity to the residence.
Firefighters simultaneously performed “a quick knock down” of the fire, while forcing entry into the vehicle so they could extricate the driver, who was unconscious, to remove him to a safer area. After a rapid assessment, firefighters determined that the driver was not breathing; firefighters immediately started CPR and were able to revive him, ultimately being assisted by members of the South Orange Rescue Squad, Advanced Life Support response and the South Orange Police Department. According to the release, emergency responders also used a naloxone nasal spray, or Narcan, on the driver; the quick-acting medication is used to block the effects of opioids.
The SORS ultimately transported the driver to University Hospital in Newark for treatment.
