NEW YORK CITY — On Sunday, Oct. 2, students from the South Orange-Maplewood School District participated in a series of masterclasses, lectures and performances at New York University’s Steinhardt. Students from Maplewood Middle School, South Orange Middle School and Columbia High School attended the NYU woodwind department’s “A Day in the Life,” an event which gives aspiring musicians the opportunity to be an NYU instrumental performance student for the day. The daily schedule included participating in mock classes around campus, performing for the applied instrumental faculty and eating lunch in a dining hall.
Throughout the day students and parents interacted with members of the New York Philharmonic, the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, and a variety of freelancers who perform on Broadway and in prestigious chamber ensembles throughout the New York City area. The day concluded with a faculty concert that highlighted all of the woodwind performance faculty of NYU Steinhardt. The event was coordinated by SOMSD instrumental music teacher Kaitlyn Walker, who is a program assistant for woodwind studies at Steinhardt.
