South Orange firefighters sport new on-duty shirts

SOUTH ORANGE, NJ — In observance of October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, firefighters swapped out their typical uniform shirts for pink shirts.

South Orange Firemens’ Mutual Benevolent Association Local 40 and 240 members sported pink on-duty T-shirts during the month of October. New Jersey firefighters, as well as firefighters across the country, traditionally support this effort and recognize the following facts:

• 1 in 8 women are expected to develop breast cancer during their lifetimes;
• A case of breast cancer is diagnosed every 29 seconds around the world and every 2 minutes in the United States;
• Mammograms don’t prevent cancer, but they can save lives by detecting breast cancer at an early stage; and
• 40 percent of diagnosed breast cancers are detected by women who feel a lump; therefore, adult women of all ages are encouraged to perform breast self-exams at least once a month

South Orange Firefighters are donating to the Susan G. Komen Foundation to support research, community health, screenings, diagnostics, treatment and assistance, clinical trials, and more.
