SOUTH ORANGE, NJ — The South Orange-Maplewood Community Coalition on Race will host “Talking about Race and Culture: The Construction of Race” with Khyati Joshi on Monday, Sept. 19, at 7 p.m. at the South Orange Middle School Library.
Joshi, a professor of education at Fairleigh Dickinson University and author and co-editor of many publications, including “Teaching for Diversity and Social Justice” and “Asian Americans in Dixie: Race and Migration in the South,” returns for a workshop on the construction of race. This is a followup to this past spring’s “Talking to Children about Race and Culture.” This time, attendees will explore the concept of race — the biology of race, the social construction of race, its myths, and how institutions and culture continue to shape race in ways that privilege whiteness.
The discussion will attempt to answer these questions: How do we come to understand social practices that benefit one group over another? What can we do to combat these practices in our home, schools, and within our children and ourselves?
