SOUTH ORANGE, NJ — The Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning, a renowned adult education series of courses, is coming to Temple Sharey Tefilo-Israel, a Reform synagogue in South Orange. The program, which provides adults with a comprehensive understanding of Jewish thought, practice and history, is open to the wider community.
“The Purposes and Rhythms of Jewish Living,” a two-pronged course, will be taught by Rabbi Daniel Cohen and Max Weisenfeld, a religious school teacher and vice president of education on the TSTI board of trustees. Classes begin on Wednesday, Oct. 18, and will meet weekly from 10 a.m. to noon. The course gives participants a framework to integrate past and future learning while challenging them to find their voice in Judaism’s diverse tradition. The course explores both ancient and modern responses to many of the major issues of Jewish thought and theology, and examines a wide variety of Jewish sources to discover the deeper meanings underlying Jewish holidays, life cycle observances and Jewish practice. The course runs through May 30, 2018; there are no classes on Nov. 22, Dec. 27, Feb. 21 and April 11. Tuition is charged.
Rabbi Alexandra Klein will teach “Foundations of Jewish Family Living: Values for Jewish Parents to Share with Their Children” one Sunday each month, starting Oct. 29. The course provides a thought-provoking encounter with the core values of Judaism and brings to life the master stories from Jewish tradition and the profound messages they convey. Participants will be able to bring the Jewish conversations home to share with their young children, providing them with the learning, language, and confidence to be a teacher to their own children. Class will meet from 9:15 to 11:15 a.m. on Oct. 29, Nov. 19, Dec. 17, Jan. 28, Feb. 11, March 4, April 22, May 20 and June 10. Tuition is charged.
