SOUTH ORANGE, NJ — Temple Sharey Tefilo-Israel, the Reform synagogue in South Orange, invites area residents to the following programs:

  • On Thursday, Nov. 2, at 7 p.m., Michael Levi, an Israeli emissary from the Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest, will explore “The Relationships Between Judaism in Israel and the United States.” Levi will discuss different perspectives on religion, politics and public life using information from Pew Research Center studies and other sources. The lecture, which is free and open to the public, is co-sponsored by TSTI’s Israel Involvement Committee. Advance registration is requested; to sign up, visit https://www.tsti.org/calendar/israel-in-the-news.
  • On Thursday, Nov. 16, at 7 p.m., learn about the Reform movement’s position on reproductive rights at “Social Justice in Focus, Part I: Reproductive Rights.” The free class, led by Rabbi Daniel Cohen, is part of TSTI’s social justice series, which will examine various social and civil rights issues throughout the year. Attendees will learn about the perspective of traditional Jewish texts on the subject, and examine ways in which modern Jews live up to the ideals of their ancestors, ways in which modern society may still fall short, and how Reform Judaism has taken clear steps to protect reproductive freedom. Advance registration is available at https://www.tsti.org/calendar/class-social-justice-in-focus-reproductive-rights.
  • On Sunday, Nov. 19, at 7 p.m., TSTI’s popular film series resumes with a screening of “Restoring Tomorrow,” with director Aaron Wolf. The film details Wolf’s personal journey of rediscovery as the treasured Wilshire Boulevard Temple in Los Angeles is lifted up by a community’s determination to achieve the impossible and save it from demise. At a time when religious institutions are threatened by declining membership engagement, this movie offers a hopeful vision of Jewish community for new generations. The director will facilitate a discussion immediately following the film and refreshments will be served. This screening is free for TSTI members and charged for non-members; register in advance at https://www.tsti.org/calendar/film-series-restoring-tomorrow.
