MAPLEWOOD, NJ — An armed robbery occurred in the area of 51 Orchard Road in Maplewood at approximately 2 p.m. on Friday, March 16, according to a press release from the Maplewood Police Department. A female victim was walking alone when she was grabbed from behind by a male, who had exited a silver vehicle. The male suspect placed a weapon to her abdomen and stole her purse; the victim was not injured. A nearby witness saw the entire incident and was able to provide information to the police.
According to Maplewood police, the suspects were also believed to have committed similar crimes on March 16 in Irvington and South Orange. According to South Orange police, a South Orange mail carrier reported that she was robbed at approximately 2:10 p.m. while delivering mail on Radel Terrace. According to the victim and other witnesses, two unknown males got out of a tan-colored vehicle and approached the mail carrier with a black revolver handgun, stealing a large amount of mail and packages out of the mail truck. The two males then fled north on Ward Place with the proceeds of the robbery.
Maplewood police sent out an information BOLO to surrounding agencies, which led to the capture of two juvenile suspects in Irvington inside a vehicle matching the description given to police.
Both apprehended persons are 16-year-old males and they have both been charged with robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery by the Maplewood Police Department, along with additional charges from other involved municipalities.
The suspects have been remanded to the custody of the Essex County Juvenile Detention Center.
