AP awards highlight student achievement at West Orange High School

WEST ORANGE, NJ — The 14th annual Advanced Placement Recognition Ceremony was held at West Orange High School on May 25, highlighting the academic accomplishments of students taking AP exams during the 2015 school year.

Advanced placement students take courses geared for first-year college students. In May they can take a College Board AP exam in their subjects. Students receive scores of one through five, with five being a perfect score. Many colleges offer course credit for students scoring a three or higher on an AP exam in that subject area.

Superintendent Jeff Rutzky, Assistant Superintendent Donna Rando, high school administrators, teachers and district supervisors were present for the prestigious recognition.

Students were recognized in a number of categories:

Outstanding Academic Performance recognizes students who received scores of five in one or more AP exams and is a WOHS-specific recognition.
AP Scholar is granted to students who received grades of three or higher on three or more AP exams.
AP Scholar with Honors is granted to students who received an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken and grades of three or higher on four or more exams.
AP Scholar with Distinction is granted to students who received an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP exams and grades of three or higher on four or more exams.
National AP Scholar is granted to students in the United States who received an average grade of at least four on all AP exams taken and grades of four or higher on eight or more of these exams.

“I want to thank our parents, administrators and educators who are dedicated to the students in the West Orange School District,” Rutzky said at the event. “And congratulations to our students. Your talents, abilities, hard work and excellence have paid off.”

While sharing with students that there will be ups and downs in their journey, Rutzky concluded by saying, “Look in the mirror and be proud of yourselves. You make us all proud.”

West Orange High School had two National AP Scholars for the 2015 testing year: Ethan Henley and Isabel Kaspriskie.
