Cliffs residents to experience Elizabethan era lifestyle

WEST ORANGE — The Cliffs at Eagle Rock in West Orange will be transformed into a “Winter’s Tale” to ring in the new year. The week-long experience is based on William Shakespeare’s famous play by that name.

During the week of Jan. 25 till the end of the month, Cliffs residents will be greeted by Elizabethan costumed attendees, fed customary fare such as: Mince Pie, Mutton, Leg of Lamb, figs, chestnuts and Elizabethan era fruits and vegetables.

Social activities will be rounded out by period musical programs, viewing Shakespearean favorites such as Romeo and Juliet, Taming of the Shrew and a Midsummer’s Night’s Dream. Along with readings of famous Sonnets.

“Whimsy played a role in choosing our Shakespearean theme,” said Activity Director Monica Brooks. “January is such a dreary month that we wanted to bring something out of the ordinary.”

One of the week’s highlights will be Jessica Davy’s lecture on Shakespeare & Music and a view of what his Globe Theater looks like today.

Residents will have a chance to do some hands-on handiwork by making a Tussie-Mussie which is a bouquet of herbs surrounding a rose to off-set the staleness of the winter’s indoor atmosphere A true mark of “Home, Sweet, Home.”
