WEST ORANGE, NJ — Resident and community activist Cynthia Hadley-Bailey was sworn in as president of the Rotary Club of West Orange for the 2018-2019 year on June 30 at Mayfair Farms. She is the 91st president of the West Orange chapter and the sixth woman president.
Hadley-Bailey has long been involved in grassroots community efforts to improve education, helping to establish Parents Advocating Special Services in Education and coordinating the West Orange African Heritage Organization’s tutoring program at Hazel Elementary School with students from Seton Hall Prep. She served as president for both organizations as well.
As a township activist, Hadley-Bailey served as chairwoman on the West Orange Human Relations Commission and worked with the Mayor’s Program for Individuals with Disabilities. Countywide, she is Vice Chairwoman of the West Orange Democratic County Committee and a member of NAACP of the Oranges.
Hadley-Bailey was inducted into the West Orange Rotary Club in 2010 and has been active in several committees, including the Third Grade Dictionary Project, by which all third-graders in West Orange schools receive dictionaries; the Community Service Awards; the Scholarship Committee; and the July 4 and Taste of the World fundraisers.
“During my presidency, I plan to promote Rotary in our township,” Hadley-Bailey said. “Most people do not know what Rotary is all about, locally and internationally. I plan to attend Town Council and Board of Education meetings, local community organization meetings informing them about Rotary, and hopefully can recruit new members. I’m looking into having an evening meeting to attract working people in the town. Many would want to get involved with our club but cannot attend our 12:15 p.m. meetings on Fridays.
“We live in a diverse town and I hope during my presidency I can recruit and more people of all ethnic groups, embrace them and encourage them to become a member of the Rotary Club of West Orange,” she concluded.
On Saturday, Oct. 20, Rotary International President Barry Rassin will be the keynote speaker at the celebration of the 90th anniversary of the Rotary Club of West Orange. The event will be held at Mayfair Farms and will feature a cocktail reception and dinner.
