Locals race to slow down cancer

WEST ORANGE, NJ — Several local residents participated in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure held at the South Mountain Recreation Complex on May 1.

Of the nine USATF Timed 5K Race medal winners, five were local, including Ben Guerin, 19, of Irvington, who won second-place in men’s with a time of 27:26; Thomas Huckfeldt, 21, of Summit, third-place in men’s with 20:57; Antoinette Courtney, 47, of North Caldwell, third-place in women’s with 24:11; Leah Kabrt, 54, of West Caldwell, first-place in survivor’s with 26:46; and Candee McAloon, 39, of Summit, second-place in survivor’s with 27:26.

More than 2,500 people braved the rain and chilly temperatures to participate in the fundraiser, which raised more than $500,000 for the fight against breast cancer.
