WEST ORANGE, NJ — Preparations are under way for the annual “Relay for Life” at West Orange High School on May 20, and this year’s event looks to be bigger than ever.
The American Cancer Society Relay for Life of West Orange will take place on May 20 and 21 from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. at West Orange High School, 51 Conforti Ave. Local volunteers and participants from the community will celebrate cancer survivors, remember those lost to the disease and take action to save more lives from cancer.
Thirty-three teams and 305 participants have already raised more than $27,000 and that number will surely increase. There is still time to join a team or donate. Several West Orange High School and local teams are signed up, including the Jr. AFROTC, the Walkaholics, the Holy Walkamolies and the Roosevelt Rough Riders.
The tentative schedule is as follows: tent set-up at 6 p.m.; opening ceremony, including survivor and caregiver laps at 7 p.m.; VIP survivor reception at 7:45 p.m.; a Dapper Dan a cappella performance at 8 p.m.; the Luminaria ceremony at 9 p.m.; and the closing ceremony and last lap at 5:30 a.m.
Ongoing activities will include a Kids Corner, which will have mini golf, a giant Connect-Four game, giant Jenga, coloring pages and bubbles; a massage therapist; food; onsite fundraisers; and Luminaria sales. There will also be themed laps. Additional tentatively scheduled activities include: Twister, a newspaper fashion show, Kan Jam Tournament, frozen T-shirt competition, rooster crowing competition and a social media scavenger hunt.
