Three people injured and one pet dead in West Orange fire

WEST ORANGE, NJ — The West Orange Fire Department responded to a report of a structure fire at 13 Pillot Place at 10:48 a.m. on Feb. 17.

Upon arrival, crews reported heavy smoke and fire showing from the two-and-a-half-story wood-frame single-family private dwelling. Initial reports indicated someone was still in the home. WOFD crews conducted primary search operations with negative results.

A coordinated and aggressive fire attack was initiated with the assistance of mutual aid from the Orange, Maplewood, Bloomfield and Belleville fire departments and the fire was placed under control at 11:46 a.m. Companies remained on scene conducting an overhaul and a cause-and-origin investigation. During a secondary search, a deceased canine was recovered.

One civilian, a resident, was transported to the hospital with a reported superficial burn to their leg. This was a fast-moving, hot fire, and two WOFD captains were injured at the fire and were evaluated and treated, one for a facial burn and one for a shoulder injury.
