WEST ORANGE, NJ — The math and science honor societies at West Orange High School held their induction ceremonies on May 31. Graduating seniors also received their cords for the June 22 graduation.
“There are some young men and women sitting here tonight that will change the world,” Superintendent Jeff Rutzky said, according to a press release. “Find what you love to do, not what’s popular.”
The Mu Alpha Theta Mathematics Honor Society, inducted eight juniors and distributed cords to 23 seniors. Math teacher Dara Brevard, who recently received the MIT Inspirational Teacher Award for 2016, is the adviser of the honor society.
The Science Honor Society inducted 56 juniors and distributed cords to 41 graduating seniors. Chemistry teacher Ronald Brandt, who has had several papers published, is the adviser.
The two societies featured a guest speaker at their induction ceremonies, and this year’s speaker was Dr. Anna M. Litvak, a medical oncologist at St. Barnabas Medical Center. Litvak shared her journey to becoming a doctor and took several questions from an eager audience.
“You represent this high school and make us so proud,” Rutzky said to the students in conclusion.
