West Orange mathematics teacher dies at 53

WEST ORANGE, NJ — Cynthia Murren Di Giovanna, a former mathematics teacher at Edison Middle School, Roosevelt Middle School and Redwood Elementary School, died suddenly on July 22. She was 53 years old.

Di Giovanna spent 15 years teaching in West Orange schools and was the recipient of several accolades for teaching excellence. She served as team leader at Edison and Roosevelt.

Di Giovanna grew up in Roseland and graduated from West Essex High School. She received her bachelor of arts degree and master’s degree in psychology and elementary education and began her career at St. Michael’s in Newark, followed by the Irvington School District. She began teaching in West Orange at Edison Middle School in 2003.

She is survived by husband David Di Giovanna; brother Andy Murren and wife Lea; sister Sharon Pezutti and husband Anthony; and many nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on July 28 at Our Lady of The Blessed Sacrament in Roseland. Interment followed at Restland Memorial Park.
