WEST ORANGE, NJ — The down-to-earth Scott Kelly returned to Earth on March 2 after 340 days aboard the International Space Station. Astronaut Kelly, a West Orange native, was helping NASA to study the effects long-duration spaceflight can have on the human body.
While Scott Kelly’s health was being monitored aboard the ISS, his twin brother, former astronaut Mark Kelly, was being monitored on Earth.
“I was excited to welcome Scott home and back to American soil after his year aboard the International Space Station. It was a risky job. Scott knew the risks — and he took them on in the name of exploration, science, and American leadership. And now we have the latest achievement in our country’s space program,” Mark Kelly said in a NASA press release. “To my brother, Scott: Thank you for your service to our nation. Thank you for helping us lead and discover. We’re really proud of you. And it’s really good to have you back on this incredible planet we all call home.”
West Orange also welcomed Scott Kelly back to the planet.
“We remember Scott as an incredibly hardworking and dedicated person,” West Orange Mayor Robert Parisi said in a statement. “We’re not surprised he’s made history becoming the first American astronaut to complete a full year in space and we’re extremely proud of him. He serves as a role model who inspires generations of West Orange children to set goals and dream big.”
