WEST ORANGE, NJ — The West Orange Police Departments is warning residents not to fall for a phone call scam from a purported “Social Security agent” demanding personal information or payment. The calls are part of an ongoing scam identified by the Social Security Administration.
According to West Orange police, someone claiming to be a Social Security agent advises the victim his or her Social Security number has been associated with criminal activity and is suspended.
The Social Security Administration warns anyone receiving the call not to engage with the caller or provide any personal information. The call should be reported to the Office of the Inspector General at 1-800-269-0271 or online at https://oig.ssa.gov/report.
