CALDWELL / WEST ORANGE, NJ — West Orange residents and Mount St. Dominic Academy students Genevieve Duran and Tyler Moorer helped to bring Earth Day awareness to the school community with a variety of activities.
During Earth Week, the students sold leaves on which fellow students wrote suggestions to help the planet. The collected donations totalled $150 and was given to a project organized by the Sisters of St. Dominic that provides wells for clean drinking water in Haiti , which is still suffering the effects of the devastating 2010 earthquake. Additionally, Duran and Moorer helped to prepare an environmental fact of the day that was announced to the student body daily during Earth Week, encouraged and awarded pins to students who brought reusable water bottles, and assisted in the distribution of recycled newspaper pencils to students, faculty and staff, showing the importance of recycling rather than cutting trees. The West Orange residents also attended the dedication of the Memorial Butterfly Garden on campus to honor the Earth and throughout the week continued to stress the idea that every day should be Earth Day, not just once a year.
Duran’s and Moorer’s efforts and activities were entered into the Caldwell Environmental Commission “Partners for the Planet” contest. The contest challenged groups to make a GREEN contribution to Earth and their contributions will be judged on April 30.
