WEST ORANGE, NJ — The township of West Orange has posted a job opportunity on its website at http://westorange.org/DocumentCenter/View/2846 for individuals to become school crossing guards. The deadline to apply is July 29; West Orange residents will be given top consideration, but anyone can apply. This job is only part-time, being seasonal, and pays an hourly rate that varies based on the guard’s experience.
Crossing guards must provide for the safety of students and members of the public, enforce crosswalk functions and procedures, and maintain student management at crosswalks within the township and around school properties. They must have the ability to enter traffic lanes to direct children and drivers; stand for undetermined amounts of time; and walk and reach with hands and arms. They must also have the visual ability to sufficiently and accurately record license plate numbers of traffic violators.
Crossing guards are required to work 100 percent outside in all types of weather and will be constantly exposed to dirt, dust and exhaust fumes. Due to all this, applicants are required to submit to a full background check and medical exam. If hired, a doctor’s note is required to be submitted to the township on an annual basis stating that guards are physically fit for duty.
For application, contact Bonnie Leskanic at 973-325-4050 or at the Business Administrator’s Office, 66 Main St. in West Orange.
