WO Education Association to present Save Your Teen Driver event

WEST ORANGE, NJ — The West Orange Education Association, in partnership with the New Jersey Education Association, will present a unique and valuable opportunity to see what kind of driver West Orange teens and their parents are on March 23 at the “Save Your Teen Driver” event in the Library Media Center at West Orange High School, 51 Conforti Ave., beginning at 7 p.m.

Parents and Teens will take an interactive, online evaluation that tests drivers mentally as well as physically in the six key areas of safe driving — speed management, space management, scanning the mirrors, attitude behind the wheel, danger zone recognition and the other driver.

Thanks to the efforts of the WOEA and the NJEA, the course, normally $100 per person, is free to teens and their parents.

From this fun and effective 20-minute evaluation, the driver learns their driving score as well as their risk level of causing a crash. A defensive driving expert will conduct a question-and-answer session following the test. Participants can bring their own laptops or register to use a computer in the Library Media Center.

Car crashes are the No. 1 killer of 15- to 20-year-olds in America — more than guns, alcohol and drugs combined. In 2014, more than 33,000 teenage drivers were involved in car crashes in New Jersey. The good news is that nine out of 10 of these are preventable.
