WEST ORANGE, NJ — Cadet Christopher J. Morgan, son of Chris and April Morgan of West Orange, recently completed cadet basic training at the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y.
Morgan entered West Point on June 27 and successfully completed six weeks of cadet basic training. CBT is one of the most challenging events a cadet will encounter over the course of their four years at the academy.
Morgan graduated from West Orange High School in 2015, where he excelled in wrestling and football. He placed fifth in the NJSIAA Individual Wrestling Championships in Atlantic City in 2015 and was also co-captain of the WOHS football team. In addition, he was a cadet second lieutenant in the WOHS Junior Air Force ROTC program.
After graduating from the high school, Morgan completed one year at the United States Military Academy Preparatory School and received his appointment to West Point U.S. Military Academy in June 2016.
While at the preparatory school, Morgan wrestled successfully and will continue to wrestle at West Point. Academically, he said he is interested in political science, foreign affairs and global economy.
“Whether or not I remain in the Army as a career officer, I want to work in Homeland Security,” Morgan said in a press release.
The initial military training program provides cadets with basic skills to instill discipline, pride, cohesion, confidence and a high sense of duty to prepare them for entry into the Corps of Cadets. Areas of summer instruction included first aid, mountaineering, hand grenades, rifle marksmanship, and nuclear, biological, and chemical training.
Morgan began classes Aug. 15. The West Point curriculum offers 37 majors balancing physical sciences and engineering with humanities and social sciences leading to a bachelor of science degree.
Upon graduation from West Point in 2020, Morgan will be commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army.
