WEST ORANGE, NJ — The West Orange High School varsity cheerleaders were named Northeast Regional Champions in the Large Varsity Non-Tumbling Division at the Universal Cheerleaders Association Northeast Regional Competition on Nov. 14, held at Pine Belt Arena in Toms River.
This is the second year the team has competed at the regionals, and its first year competing in this division. Judging criteria included crowd-leading and skill incorporation. As a result of their first-place win, the cheerleaders received an automatic bid to the UCA Nationals, to be held at ESPN Wide World of Sports at Disney World in February.
In addition to the regional championship, a special team competed in the Game Day Division; the competition included a squad performance of a timeout cheer, a band chant and a sideline cheer based on a designated game situation. Teams were judged on execution, crowd effectiveness, energy and overall performance.
The WOHS game day team was also awarded a bid to compete at the UCA Nationals in February.
