Barbara Noyes Doran, 102, died peacefully at on Thursday, December 03, 2015. She was born in New York City, NY to Blanche Carter Noyes and H. Howard Noyes. She was a life-long resident of Maplewood, New Jersey where she practiced as a physician for 35 years.
Barbara was a graduate of Columbia High School, Maplewood, NJ. She graduated from Randolph Macon Women’s College with a degree in Biology in 1936 and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. In 1940, she earned a Master’s degree in Chemistry from Columbia University. She worked in research at Columbia in the biochemistry department and later worked at Mount Sinai specializing in field of immunology. During World War II, she worked as a chemist and participated in the development and patent of the soluble form of vitamin B. Her medical research inspired her to become a physician. She graduated from Albany Medical College in 1949, completed her internship from Jersey City Medical Center in 1950 and completed her residency from St. Barnabas in 1951.
She was on staff at Presbyterian Hospital, Orange Memorial, and St. Barnabas. She was a member of the Medical Society of New Jersey, The Medical Women’s Association, and served on the Executive Committee of Essex County Planned Parenthood. She was an active member of Morrow Memorial Church, Maplewood, NJ, and generously volunteered in various ways through many years.
Barbara was predeceased by her husband, James W. Doran in 1978. She is survived by her three loving children; James W. Doran Jr. ( Gladys), Mary D. Ball ( Robert), and Ellen D. Ryan (Allan). She was the cherished grandmother of 13 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
