Elaine Pincus

Elaine Pincus passed away peacefully in her sleep at her home this past Saturday, January 23.
The daughter of Dorothy and Joseph Bonda, Elaine was born and raised in Newark.  After graduating from Weequahic High School at 16, she received a bachelor’s and master’s degree from New York University.  Elaine was passionate about education.  She spent her career in the Newark school system, working as a teacher and guidance counselor, and later for many years at the Board of Education.  After retiring, she volunteered for the state Division of Youth and Family Services.
Elaine married Robert Pincus in 1960. They moved to South Orange the following year, where they raised their three children and where she lived until her death.
Elaine was a devoted and life-long member of Temple B’nai Abraham.  A strong and vibrant presence, Elaine was a stylish woman who was known for the hats (usually with a pin) that she always wore in shul.  She was active in temple affairs, serving as a trustee and on numerous committees, and she strove to connect the temple to the wider community.  Elaine also helped provide assistance to Russian immigrants and served on the board of the Jewish Community Housing Corporation.
Elaine is survived by her sons, Howard and Jonathan (each of whom was married under the beautiful chuppa that she made for their weddings), her daughter-in-law Rhonda, and her grandchildren Samantha, Joshua, Talia and Joseph, as well as many nieces and nephews, and their children and grandchildren.  She was predeceased by her beloved husband of almost fifty years; their son, David; and her brother, Robert Bonda.
Contributions in Elaine’s memory may be made to the David Pincus Memorial Scholarship for Screenwriters at the American Film Institute, 2021 N. Western Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90027.
