Gerard S. Belmonte Sr. , 93, of Bloomfield, passed away on Friday April 15, 2016 at the Armenian Rehabilitation Center in Emerson.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation at the O’Boyle Funeral Home, 309 Broad St. Bloomfield on Tuesday from 1-3 and 6-8 PM. A funeral service with military honors will take place at 2:30 PM. Interment Private. Please express condolences at
Born in Newark, Jerry lived the last 52 years in Bloomfield. He was a Captain of the Football and Baseball teams at Barringer High School, as well as a member of the Seton Hall University Baseball team. He was a Sergeant in the Army during WWII where he was a member of the US Army Baseball team playing alongside Chuck Connors and Red Schoendienst. He was a graduate of Seton Hall University receiving his Masters Degree in Education.
Jerry was the former Recreation Director for the City of Newark. Prior to that he was a Physical Education, Italian and Health Teacher for Bloomfield High School and the former Director of Newark City Stadium.
He was a member of Mountain Crest Beach Club in West Orange, the New Jersey Football Association for over 50 years and was an inductee of the College Football Hall of Fame as a Referee. He officiated his last game at the age of 85. He was also the past president, rules interpreter, state examiner and school teacher of New Cadets at the New Jersey Football Officials Association and a professional football official for the CFL.
Jerry was the husband of the late Sarah D’Andrea Belmonte for 70 years; father of Susan Giardino and her husband Edward of Doylestown, PA and Jerry and his wife Eileen of Nutley; brother of the late Carmella Benedict and Estelle Durand. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
