Jane Davis Hamingson, who lived in Maplewood and South Orange 1957-1978, died in Los Angeles on March 1. Jane was born April 28, 1928, in Swarthmore, PA, and grew up there and in Ridgewood, NJ.
She earned a B.A. in English from the University of Pennsylvania, and held a love of writing and reading her entire life. In 1953, she married Donald F. Hamingson; in 1960, they bought a house in South Orange where they raised their family. Jane received her Master’s degree from Bank Street College of Education, and taught at South Mountain Elementary School. After Jane and Don separated, she moved to New York City, where she worked in educational design, training, and editing, and served on two boards. In 2007, she relocated to Los Angeles and became an active member of the Kingsley Manor retirement community. Jane’s adventurous spirit led her to bicycle across Europe with Don in 1954, spend a year in Norwich, England with extensive European travels, take up ballet at the age of 64, help monitor Manx Shearwaters in Scotland, and be game for outings from Long Island to Indonesia.
Jane is survived and much missed by her children, Ellen (Inverness, CA), Paul (Woodland Hills, CA), and Sarah (Moab, UT); her sister, Barbara Clark (Orono, ME); her grandchildren, Natalie and Dashiell; and her nephew, John, and niece, Kate.
