Thomas J. Dolan, 91, died on Thursday, April 2, at Crane’s Mill in West Caldwell, from Covid-19 complications. A funeral service will be held later.
Tom was born in Orange, New Jersey on June 6, 1928, and lived in Bloomfield, where he attended Sacred Heart School. After graduating from Seton Hall Prep, he enlisted in the army in 1946, where he served with the occupation forces in Japan. He earned a degree from Fordham University, then spent over 40 years as a sales engineer at General Electric, retiring in 1994. He lived in Glen Ridge for over 55 years, before moving to Crane’s Mill after the death of his wife, Mary, in 2016. Tom and Mary celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 2015. Tom had an active retirement, traveling across the U.S. and serving as a lector and on the finance committee at Sacred Heart Church, and as a driver for the American Red Cross. He was an exceptional tennis and squash player, winning the National Hardball Championship (age 65+) in 1996. He made lifelong friends playing in leagues, tournaments and just for fun at the Arlington Players club in Kearney and the YMCA of Montclair.
Tom is survived by his children, Kathleen Shanley and her husband, Mark, of Wilmette, Ill.; Carol Woods and her husband, Timothy, of Moultonborough, N.H.; Thomas Dolan and his wife, Sally, of New Providence, N.J.; Joseph Dolan and his wife, Alison, of Bloomfield, N.J., and by 12 grandchildren. In addition to his wife Mary, he was predeceased by his daughters, Mary Patricia and Maureen, and by his brother James, and sister Eileen.
